Recently, the European Commission has initiated the first steps to offer Interrail tickets free of charge to Europeans turning 18. The idea is to give 20,000 to 30,000 young Europeans turning 18 this year the opportunity to know other European countries and cultures.
For many generations Interrail has been a symbol of European integration. Exploratory trips by train across the continent are a great way to create awareness of European values and the European sense of community through social contacts. In that way, young people from different cultures can get together and discover Europe. In addition, the important target of reducing the harmful influence of the transport industry on the environment and society is enhanced; a great promotion for this sustainable and environmentally friendly way of travelling. Interrail tickets are available not just for young people but can also be purchased by adults and senior citizens.
